Week 2
November 17-21: Students will be introduced to bibliographies and what information about sources to keep track of. They will begin to fill out graphic organizer on topic and continue their research. They should NOT be worried about starting on type of projects at this point. Researching further is key to successful completion.

Week 1
Students should be researching their individual and narrowing down the action and legacy to one specific event. Most students have an individual picked out but have not narrowed it down to that specific event. We teachers keep referring to this one event as a "seed" within the watermelon. The life story of the individual is the watermelon. Please send comments if you have questions or found something to be helpful at the NHD webpage.

The link to the NHD website is now working. Open the link and click on any of the three buttons on the left side, then across the top will give you choices. The student and parent link will give some useful information and other links to assist in the research.

What is History Fair?
According to National History Day (NHD) guidelines, History Fair is an educational program devoted to improving the teaching and learning of history in our schools. NHD is a meaningful way for students to study historical issues, ideas, people and events by engaging in historical research. NHD is sponsored in each state, beginning at the local district level.
Theme for 2008-2009 History Fair:
The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies
Students need to focus on an individual in history, not a group or team. Students need to focus on the actions and legacies of the individual, not writing a biography. Legacy is defined as something that is handed down and remains from a previous generation or time.
Once an individual is selected, students need to research significant events the individual was involved in. Next they select ONE of those events to continue research and form an opinion what legacy was left.
Timeline for completing History Fair:
November 10: Select an individual to research
November 10-14: Research the actions of individual and select one to continue researching. Keep track of resources used and collect pictures, maps, journal entries, etc. Select type of project you’ll complete and whether you are doing an individual or group project.
November 17-21: Continue research and begin to form an opinion regarding their legacy. Remember to keep track of all resources used.
November 24-26: Begin to organize the layout and assemble project. If doing a performance or documentary begin practicing or filming of project.
December 2: All projects are due for evaluation.
December 4: History Fair viewing for parents and 4th grade.
